How long of a drive is too long for a day trip? 3-4 hours sounds about right. Any longer, and you won't have enough time to enjoy being wherever you're going, so it would be better to stay overnight at that point. I once drove 2.5 hours to go to Lake Itasca for a few hours. That's probably close to my limit for one day.
