How many elevators are in the Tower of Terror?

Elevating to a New Dimension The heart and soul of the Tower of Terror are of course the “elevators,” and there are eight elevators inside the Tower, each with a capacity of 21 Guests. However, in the tower's early days, this was not the case. When the Tower first opened, each elevator had room for 22.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios features a total of eight elevator cabs (VVCs - Vertical Vehicle Conveyors) operating within the structure. However, the system is more complex than a standard elevator bank. The ride consists of four separate "Show Shafts" where the initial scenes (the 5th Dimension) take place, and two main "Drop Shafts" where the actual thrill sequence occurs. The elevator cabs are unique because they are self-propelled, allowing them to move horizontally out of the show shafts and into the drop shafts. This design allows Disney to run multiple cabs simultaneously to maximize "throughput" and keep the line moving. Behind the scenes, the ride is controlled by a sophisticated computer system that "randomizes" the drop sequence, ensuring that every ride is a slightly different experience. Maintenance teams regularly cycle these cabs out of service for inspections, which is why the ride may occasionally operate at a reduced capacity with only one of the two drop shafts active.

Words can't describe the feeling of excitement and terror when the drops start. Amazing. Duration-Good-If you include the preshow, it's perfect. But I always thought the ride should explore a floor or two more of the hotel tower.

Some little known fact about the tower is that Florida state law requires that a building that reaches or surpasses 200 ft must have an aircraft beacon be placed on top. The imagineers built the building at 199 ft to avoid putting a beacon on, which they felt would detach guests from the illusion of the Orlando hotel.
