How many Hilton points do you need to get a free room?
Free nights can be redeemed for as few as 5,000 Points per night and no more than 95,000 Points per night for a standard room. Select properties with specialty accommodations may require up to 120,000 Points per night for a standard room.

As you can see, you will need to earn Gold or Diamond elite status to qualify for free room upgrades with Hilton. If you don't stay in hotels frequently enough, you can achieve status by getting a credit card (see below). You can also purchase room upgrades using your rewards points.
