For the majority of major airlines in 2026, you cannot check your baggage more than 4 hours before your scheduled departure. This rule exists to prevent airport baggage handling systems and storage areas from becoming overwhelmed by "early" luggage. If you arrive 6 or 8 hours early for a flight, you will likely be told by the kiosk or the agent to wait until the 4-hour window opens. There are a few exceptions: if you are connecting from another flight, your bags are usually "checked through" automatically regardless of the time. Some major hub airports (like London Heathrow or Singapore Changi) and select airlines (like Emirates or Qatar) offer "Early Check-In" lounges where you can drop bags up to 24 hours in advance for a fee or as a perk of a premium ticket. Additionally, if you are departing from a "city center" check-in terminal (common in Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur), you can often drop your bags much earlier. For a standard domestic U.S. flight, however, sticking to the 2-to-4-hour window is the safest bet to ensure your luggage is accepted and processed for your flight.
