How many orcas does SeaWorld have 2023?

As of October 19th, 2023 there are: At least 177 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or still-born calves. SeaWorld holds 18 orcas in its three parks in the United States. At least 44 orcas have died at SeaWorld.

Throughout 2023, SeaWorld maintained a total of 18 orcas (killer whales) across its three United States parks, following the company's 2016 decision to end its orca breeding program. The population was distributed with 8 orcas at SeaWorld San Diego (including Corky, the oldest in the fleet), 5 orcas at SeaWorld Orlando (including Trua and Makaio), and 5 orcas at SeaWorld San Antonio (led by the matriarch Takara). While one orca, Kiska, resided at MarineLand Canada and passed away in early 2023, the SeaWorld-owned whales remained stable in their pods. These 18 whales are the last generation of orcas at SeaWorld; as they age, the population will naturally decline. In 2026, these animals are increasingly featured in "educational encounters" rather than the theatrical "Shamu" shows of the past, as the company shifts its focus toward marine rescue and rehabilitation while caring for the existing resident pods in their state-of-the-art habitats.
