You + Two Bags = No Extra ChargeUnlike many transportation options, traveling with Amtrak is twice as nice with our generous baggage policy. When you travel with us, you can carry-on two free pieces of luggage. Each item should not exceed 50 lbs. (23 kg) and needs to be 28 x 22 x 14 inches in size.
There is no official size or weight restrictions, however luggage must not be so big or heavy that it cannot be handled by a single person. Luggage should be stored in overhead luggage racks, under the seats or in one of the luggage compartments located near the doors or in the middle of the carriage.
The following items are prohibited onboard the train: non-service animals, firearms and ammunition, hover boards, corrosive or dangerous chemicals and materials, incendiaries, martial arts and self-defense items, archery equipment, devices containing propellants, sharp objects, and similar items.
Baggage limits and restrictions vary by airline, routing, and fare class. The general rules are that you can carry on up to two bags — one personal item to fit under the seat and one piece of luggage that fits within the size requirements for the overhead bin.
Checked baggage service is available at a number of our stations and on many trains and Thruway Services. Not all trains or locations are equipped to handle checked baggage. Before you travel, make sure to check and see if your train and origin and destination stations accept checked baggage.
There are overhead luggage racks in all Amtrak cars, as well as a big luggage rack either at one end of the car on single level cars or downstairs by the entry doors on the bi-level cars. The overhead racks will take a pretty big suitcase, larger in fact that what you're officially allowed to carry onto the train.

If possible, try to secure the bag with a lock or cable tie so that it cannot easily be taken away from you. Additionally, if there is space available for storage above or below the seat, use it!
If your bag is over 50 lbs (23 kg), or if its length, width, and height added together are over 62 inches (157 cm), you may be charged an additional fee, on top of the normal bag fee.
Bringing Your Food AboardYou may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars.
Similar to cruise ships, most trains do allow you to bring aerosol products onboard. So, thankfully, there is no need to worry about the possibility of hindering your daily beauty regimen on your long overnight train ride. Traveling with small personal aerosol products on a train is safe and simple.
You can bring your own food on the train (as meals are not included in Economy class), however there are also snacks, meals, and beverages available to purchase on board with cash or credit.
Each passenger may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or100 milliliters. Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels and aerosols.
