The Costa Concordia was only eight years old when it partially sank off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy, on January 13, 2012. Construction on the vessel began in early 2004 at the Fincantieri Sestri Ponente shipyard in Italy, and it was officially launched in September 2005. The ship was christened in July 2006 by supermodel Eva Herzigová and embarked on its maiden voyage shortly thereafter. At the time of the disaster, the ship was considered a relatively new and state-of-the-art member of the Costa Cruises fleet, boasting modern amenities across its 13 passenger decks. Its service life was tragically short compared to the typical 25-to-30-year lifespan of a modern cruise ship. Following the grounding, the vessel remained partially submerged for over two years until it was successfully righted and towed to Genoa in 2014, where it was eventually scrapped in 2017.
