How reliable are German trains?

German trains are clean, comfortable, reliable and fast. Between the downtown areas of most German cities the travel time by train is as fast or faster than the travel time by plane, when you calculate in the time it takes to get to and from the airport. Buy your ticket before boarding!

In 2026, the reliability of German trains (Deutsche Bahn) is a major point of national debate, as punctuality hit a historic low of 60.1% for long-distance services in 2025. While regional "S-Bahn" and local trains remain relatively dependable, the high-speed "ICE" network is currently plagued by frequent delays and cancellations. This is largely due to a "perfect storm" of decades of underinvestment and a massive, country-wide infrastructure modernization program that has resulted in constant speed restrictions and track closures. While the German government has committed over €100 billion to fix the network by 2029, the immediate reality for travelers is a system that feels "un-German" in its unpredictability. It is a peer-to-peer recommendation to allow at least 45 to 60 minutes for any connections when booking ICE trains and to always use the "DB Navigator" app, which provides real-time "Delay Alarm" notifications to help you navigate the frequent timetable changes.

Originally Answered: Why are German trains so expensive ? For the longest time, the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) had a monopoly on inter city ground travel. That let them set the price at whatever rate they want. Although this company is 100% owned by the German state it's still a private company.
