Three full days in Kyoto is considered the "ideal" minimum to see the city's major highlights without feeling completely overwhelmed. A standard 3-day itinerary allows you to dedicate one day to Eastern Kyoto (Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, and Higashiyama), one day to Western Kyoto (Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Kinkaku-ji), and a final day for the Southern areas (Fushimi Inari Taisha) plus some flexible time for downtown shopping or a tea ceremony. While you won't see all 1,600+ temples, three days gives you enough time to experience the distinct "vibe" of different districts. However, if you plan to use Kyoto as a base for day trips to Nara or Osaka, you would need to add at least one day for each excursion to avoid rushing through Kyoto's own cultural treasures.
