Geographically, Nara is slightly closer to Osaka than it is to Kyoto, but the difference is minimal for the average traveler. Nara is located approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) east of central Osaka (Namba area) and about 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of central Kyoto. In terms of travel time in 2026, the journey from both cities is nearly identical. From Osaka, the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba Station takes about 35 to 40 minutes on an Express train. From Kyoto, the Kintetsu Limited Express from Kyoto Station takes roughly 34 to 35 minutes, while the JR Miyakoji Rapid Service takes about 45 minutes. Because Nara is situated almost perfectly in the middle of the "Keihanshin" triangle, it is a highly popular day-trip destination from either city. If you are staying near the JR Osaka Station (Umeda), the direct JR Yamatoji Line will take about 50 minutes. Ultimately, whether you are coming from the modern neon streets of Osaka or the historic temples of Kyoto, you can expect to reach the famous deer and giant Buddha of Nara in under an hour.
