A seat pitch of 79 cm (approximately 31 inches) is considered the standard "average" for most international and major domestic airlines in economy class. While it is certainly better than the 71–74 cm (28–29 inches) typically found on ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit or Ryanair, it may feel tight for taller passengers over 180 cm. In the 1990s, the industry standard was closer to 86 cm, but most legacy carriers have reduced this to 79–81 cm to increase cabin density. For a short-haul flight of under three hours, 79 cm is perfectly adequate for the average adult. However, for long-haul transoceanic flights, many travelers prefer a pitch of 81–86 cm (32–34 inches) to avoid knee fatigue. To maximize comfort at this pitch, look for aircraft with "slimline" seats, which use thinner materials in the seatback to provide an extra inch of actual knee clearance even if the pitch remains the same.
