Basel SBB is located in Switzerland, specifically at Centralbahnplatz in the city center of Basel. It is the largest and most important railway station in the city and serves as a major international hub connecting Switzerland, France, and Italy. While it is on Swiss soil, it is unique for being one of the world's busiest "international border stations." Interestingly, the city of Basel actually has three major stations: Basel SBB (Swiss), Basel SNCF (which is a dedicated wing within the SBB station for French trains), and Basel Badischer Bahnhof (the "German Station"). Basel Badischer is actually located on the northern side of the Rhine and is operated by Germany's Deutsche Bahn, even though it is also technically within the Swiss city limits. If you are traveling from Frankfurt or Munich on an ICE train in 2026, you may stop at both "Basel Bad" and "Basel SBB," but the SBB station is the one you want for the easiest access to Basel's historic old town, its world-class museums, and the majority of the city's domestic Swiss rail connections and tram lines.
