Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is generally considered "challenging" but not "difficult" due to its unique layout. Unlike other major hubs that have multiple separate buildings connected by trains, CLT has a single terminal with five concourses (A-E) all connected behind security. This means you never have to take a shuttle or train to change flights. However, the airport is "victim to its own success"; it is a very compact space handling a massive volume of people (over 58 million in 2024). The main hallways and the "Atrium" can feel extremely crowded during the mid-day American Airlines "push." Concourse E, used for regional flights, is notoriously long and can require a 15-minute walk from the main security checkpoint. For 2026 travelers, the "Terminal Lobby Expansion" has significantly improved the check-in and security areas, making the "front-end" of the airport much smoother. If you have a connection under 45 minutes, it can be stressful due to the walking distances, but the simplicity of the "one-roof" design makes it much harder to actually "get lost" compared to sprawling airports like O'Hare or DFW.
