Is Charlotte NC airport easy to navigate?

It's easy to navigate between concourses — no need for a shuttle. Parking is more affordable than most airports its size. And, most importantly, we have some of the shortest TSA wait times in the U.S.

Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) is widely considered one of the easiest major hubs to navigate because of its single-terminal design. Unlike many large airports that require trains or buses to move between terminals, CLT features one central building where all five concourses (A, B, C, D, and E) branch out like spokes on a wheel. This allows passengers to walk to any gate without leaving the secure area. While the airport has grown significantly—housing 114 gates as of 2026—the layout remains compact. Most gate-to-gate walks take between 5 and 15 minutes, though the trek to the far end of Concourse E can take up to 20 minutes. Moving walkways are available in the longer corridors to assist. The airport is also praised for its clear overhead signage and the "CLT Airport" app, which provides real-time maps. For most travelers, the biggest "navigation" challenge isn't the layout, but rather the sheer volume of people, as CLT is a primary hub for American Airlines and can get quite crowded during peak connection windows.

A minimum 1 hour scheduled connection time should be sufficient for domestic connections. MCT for anything involving international flights is 90 minutes; that will work for domestic to international, but: I'm a non-US passport holder connecting in CLT from an international to a domestic flight.

In most cases, a 30-minute layover for domestic flights and an hour for international flights is considered a minimum, or short, layover.

Mark Howell, a regional spokesperson for the Transportation Security Agency, told The Charlotte Observer that the general rule of thumb is to arrive at the airport two hours before your departure for domestic flights and three hours before your departure for international flights.

There are no trams or shuttles to catch to connect from one flight to another. All gates are accessible under one roof. All concourses and aircraft gates are accessible from any security checkpoint.

There are even regional jet connections allowable at 25 minutes, though 30 and 35 minute connections are common. While many of these connections are doable, inbound aircraft can get slowed down in alleyways or while waiting for gates. So the last few minutes can be the difference between making a connection or not.

What is the minimum layover for domestic flights in Charlotte? The minimum layover that I would recommend in Charlotte from one domestic flight to another is 35 minutes. Honestly, you could probably do it in as little as 25, but I wouldn't recommend it.

MORE DETAILS

I think that 45 min. is the recommended transfer time at CLT. Personally, I'd want at least an hour to an hour and 15 min. CLT is infamous for late arrivals and for planes having to wait on the tarmac for their gates to open up.

I would advise against such a short layover. Arriving in Charlotte and getting off the plane are two different things--on a good day, it may take 10 minutes or more to taxi to the gate and get off the plane after landing. Any snag or weather issues could make it longer than that.

MORE DETAILS

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is fairly small compared to other international airports. All of the gates are accessible from inside … no monorails or busses. Provided that your arrival flight is on time and that your departure destination is domestic, 50 minutes should be more than sufficient.

If your itinerary was purchased as one ticket (as in: you have only one itinerary and one confirmation number), and the connection time was too short and you miss the second (or third) flight, you can rest easy, no matter what happens. The airline will simply put you onto the next available flight, free of charge.

Generally speaking, most airlines will make some kind of efforts to wait for delayed passengers on a connecting flight, though this is not necessarily guaranteed. In some cases, airlines may be able to hold a connecting flight for a period of time, but it is not something that is typically guaranteed by any airline.

MORE DETAILS

If a delay in your first flight is the reason you're missing your connection, don't worry too much. Usually, most airlines will rebook you on the next flight, and that too for free. Although, you might have to fly on standby depending on seat availability.

Charlotte is a fortress hub for American Airlines, which operates the majority of the airport's flights. The airport has 3 operating runways and 1 non operating runway and one passenger terminal with 115 gates across five concourses.

I'd want an hour or (better) two, at a minimum. Charlotte is not a bad airport to have a layover. Plenty of shops, restaurants and several nice areas to relax with rocking chairs. If you have checked bags they won't make it to the next plane.

Some Charlotte growth plans call for a train to help transport passengers to a future terminal. Currently, Charlotte has 106 gates and five concourses over 50 acres, according to the airport. By comparison, Atlanta has 192 gates and seven concourses on about 150 acres, according to that airport.

Allowing yourself at least a 60-minute layover for domestic flights and a two-hour layover time for international flights can often be a much more comfortable and stress-free journey than booking a flight with a very tight connection.

As long as they're domestic flights, no. If you were traveling, say, from Canada to the US, you'd have to go through both Canadian and then American security to catch your connecting flight.

Travel advisers say there's a lot to take into account when booking connecting flights, but a general rule of thumb is 60-90 minutes between domestic flights and at least two to three hours for international itineraries.
