It was okay during the day, but after dark, especially after 9pm, you might feel a little uncomfortable. I stayed with my family at the Gare du Nord in October 2014 when I was visiting Paris. The area is populated with immigrants and is generally a lower income neighborhood, from what I could tell.

If you plan to live in the 19th arrondissement, avoid these areas at night when alone: Stalingrad and Jaurés on the west, Danube and Mouzaia in the east, and Cambrai in the North. You might want to take caution near the Buttes Chaumont parc and Ourcq canal as well.

For instance, try and avoid some neighborhoods of the 19th and 18th arrondissements as they're quiet, empty, and shady during the late hours. Don't walk through the small streets, especially if you're alone.

It's where you go to reach London on the Eurostar, but the majority of the millions of passengers are commuters on their way to and from jobs in the city.

It's a pretty dodgy, run down station. Lots of armed guards, dubious characters and very busy. The surrounding streets are not very desirable and definitely wouldnt venture there late at night. Still, if you're leaving Paris by train, there's not a lot of choice.
