Is Greyhound strict with bags?

One (1) small bag up to 25 lbs (11 kg) can be taken on board for each adult or child. Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead compartment or under your seat.

In 2026, Greyhound's "strictness" depends on how busy the bus is. Officially, your ticket includes one carry-on bag (up to 25 lbs) and one under-bus bag (up to 50 lbs). They have become much more consistent about weighing the under-bus bags at major terminals, and if yours exceeds 50 lbs, you will be charged an "overweight" fee or asked to remove items. Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat; if a bag is visibly too large for the cabin, drivers will often insist it be tagged and placed under the bus, which may incur a fee if you've already used your free allowance. Unlike airlines, Greyhound is generally more lenient with the shape of the bag (boxes and duffels are fine), but they are very strict about prohibited items—security checks at many 2026 terminals now include bag scans for safety.

When your Greyhound bus is targeted for a search in my experience it's pretty thorough. There are drug sniffing dogs and law enforcement agents go through bags looking for drugs. Basically, if you have drugs in your luggage or on your person they are probably going to find them. I wouldn't risk it.
