However, both airports handle international and domestic operations, and before the COVID-19 pandemic, many airlines were switching over to Haneda to offer international services.

For most travelers visiting Tokyo, Haneda Airport (HND) is the superior choice due to its extreme proximity to the city center. Located just 15–30 minutes from major hubs like Shinagawa or Ginza, it saves significant time and transit costs compared to Narita. Haneda is integrated into the Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu lines, making the commute seamless. On the other hand, Narita Airport (NRT) is located about 60 kilometers away in Chiba Prefecture, requiring a 60-to-90-minute journey via the Narita Express (N'EX) or Skyliner. While Narita often handles more long-haul international flights and may occasionally offer cheaper fares, the cost of the express train (around 3,000 yen) often offsets those savings. Narita is excellent if you are staying in eastern Tokyo areas like Ueno or if you enjoy high-end airport shopping, as its terminals are quite sprawling. However, if your priority is to start your vacation immediately and avoid a long post-flight haul, Haneda's convenience is nearly impossible to beat in the current 2026 travel landscape.
