Is it better to stay in Como or Menaggio?

Como could be a great option for people flying into Milan or wanting a larger town with more options and nightlife. Bellagio and Varenna are also great choices and are larger than Menaggio. I found Menaggio to have better prices and a more local feel. The views from this side of the lake are also spectacular.

Choosing between Como and Menaggio depends on the type of atmosphere and accessibility you prefer for your Lake Como trip. Como is the largest city on the lake, offering a "metropolitan" feel with historic architecture, high-end shopping, and a direct train connection to Milan (approx. 40-60 mins). It is a vibrant year-round hub with a wider variety of restaurants and hotels. In contrast, Menaggio is a picturesque village located in the "Golden Triangle" center of the lake. It offers a much more relaxed, authentic lakeside vibe and is better positioned for visiting other iconic towns like Bellagio and Varenna via the frequent mid-lake ferries. While Como is more convenient for transit and city life, Menaggio is arguably the "better" stay for those who want the classic, romantic Lake Como scenery and easy access to the most famous villas and gardens without the "big city" noise.
