Is it easy to drive from Florence to Cinque Terre?

With ideal conditions, driving from Florence to Cinque Terre takes about 2.5 hours. However, we actually don't recommend taking your car all the way to Cinque Terre.

Driving from Florence to Cinque Terre is "easy" in terms of navigation, but extremely difficult in terms of logistics and parking. The journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours via the A11 and A12 autostradas, but once you exit the highway, the roads become narrow, winding, and incredibly steep as they cling to the cliffs. The five villages themselves (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso) are largely car-free zones with very limited, expensive parking lots that fill up by 9:00 AM. Most "pro" travelers in 2026 recommend the "Train Strategy": drive from Florence to the city of La Spezia, park your car in the large secure lot beneath the central train station, and then take the "Cinque Terre Express" train which reaches each village in 5 to 15 minutes. Driving directly into the villages often results in high stress, potential fines for entering "ZTL" (restricted) zones, and the risk of damaging a rental car on the tight stone corners. If you must drive, only Monterosso has a sizable parking area, but even there, a spot is never guaranteed during the peak summer months.
