Is Mammoth Cave worth it?

There is so much to learn here and their Junior Ranger program is very good compared to some other national parks. Besides the caves, there is excellent hiking, canoeing, biking, and many other things. And, the town of Cave City has lots to do as well. Stay in the park if you can, it is worth it.

Most of the tours are significantly longer, and there's far more history involved. Diamond Caverns probably gets the edge for its formations, though Cleveland Avenue is well decorated with a different type of formation. You might see better colors at Diamond, but Frozen the Niagara tour is going to be fairly similar.

With 18 miles of easy to access trails found on the south side of the Green River, you can take a day to explore the above ground geology and history of the park, or simply venture out on a quick hike between your cave tours and ranger-led programs.

  1. Do not run or jump in a cave. Plan each move carefully.
  2. Do not enter a cave when there is rain predicted in the area. Cave often flood suddenly.
  3. Never touch or damage stalactites or other cave formations. These take thousands of years to grow.
