Why a visit to Luxor is a must. Situated in the Nile Valley in Upper Egypt, Luxor is an essential component of any Egyptian itinerary. January and February are definitely the best value months in terms of Egypt last minute travel deals. Travelers who adore a cooler Israel and Egypt, who do not want to spend their entire trip lying in the sun, go there time after time during these months.

You'll want at the very least 4 and preferably 5 or 6 days on the ground there. If you have 5 or 6, I'd recommend spending 2 in Cairo, an overnight in Luxor, and taking a day trip up to Alexandria from Cairo. If you have longer you can stay overnight in Alex too. But I've done it as a day trip dozens of times.

Luxor is safe to walk at night along the Corniche, to reach restaurants, and to visit Luxor Temple which is centrally located. Karnak is a little further from the main hub of the city, so I wouldn't walk there unless your hotel is close.
