Is Qatar and British Airways Avios the same?

On March 23, Qatar Airways dropped the name Qmiles and adopted Avios as the name of its mileage currency. If that name sounds familiar, that's because Avios is the mileage currency of British Airways, Iberia Airlines, Aer Lingus and Vueling.

In 2026, Qatar Airways and British Airways both use Avios as their loyalty currency, and they are effectively "interchangeable" but not exactly the same "account." While each airline maintains its own "Executive Club" (BA) or "Privilege Club" (Qatar), you can link your accounts to move Avios back and forth at a 1:1 ratio instantly. This was a major 2022-2026 integration that allows travelers to take advantage of the best "sweet spot" redemptions on either carrier. For example, you might earn Avios on a BA flight to London but transfer them to Qatar to book a "Qsuite" to Doha because the tax/fee structure is lower on the Qatar platform. While they share the same "name" and value, they have different expiration rules and different "Peak/Off-Peak" calendars. A supportive peer tip: always check the Finnair and Iberia portals too, as they also use Avios and sometimes offer better availability for the exact same seat.
