As of February 2026, Sanibel Island is nearing a full recovery from the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian in 2022, but it is not "100% open" in the sense that some specific landmarks and older buildings are still under reconstruction. However, the vast majority of the island's high-value tourism infrastructure is active. All beaches and beach parking lots have officially reopened, and the Sanibel Causeway is fully functional. Most major resorts, including the Sundial Beach Resort and the Sanibel Inn, are welcoming guests with refreshed facilities. Popular dining spots like Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille and the relocated Lighthouse Café are open for business. The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is also open for visitors to enjoy the island's natural beauty. While you may still see some construction sites or "coming soon" signs for smaller mom-and-pop shops, the island has successfully returned to being a premier destination for shelling and relaxation for the 2025-2026 winter season.
