Is Sanibel Island open to the public?

Sanibel Island is now open to anyone who wants to visit. The reopening comes just a day after the tolls on the Sanibel Causeway were reinstated. Sanibel's recovery progress includes 80% of right-of-way debris being removed from the East Periwinkle Way bridge.

Sanibel Island is fully open to the public, including all major beach access points and commercial districts. Unlike the immediate aftermath of the 2022 hurricane when access was restricted to residents and contractors, there are currently no "checkpoints" or restrictions for day-trippers or tourists. Public parking lots at popular spots like Bowman's Beach, Lighthouse Beach Park, and Blind Pass are operational, though some may still utilize temporary mobile payment systems. The city of Sanibel continues to welcome visitors as a vital part of its economic recovery. It is important to note that while the island is "open," it remains a quiet, nature-focused community with strict speed limits and a ban on high-rise buildings and chain restaurants. In 2026, the island’s commitment to "conservation first" is more evident than ever, and visitors are asked to respect the ongoing environmental restoration efforts, particularly regarding the protection of sea turtle nests and the fragile dune systems that were replanted following the storm.
