Is Slinky Dog Dash like Thunder Mountain?

As an outdoor coaster, Slinky Dog Dash certainly feels higher off the ground than its cousins – the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Big Thunder Mountain. With a 50 ft peak, there are times when the ground seems far below you, but it doesn't last for long.

While both are "family-friendly" coasters, Slinky Dog Dash (Hollywood Studios) and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Magic Kingdom) offer very different sensations. Slinky Dog Dash is a modern "multi-launch" coaster that is much smoother and features "airtime" hills that give you a floating feeling; its top speed is roughly 40 mph. Big Thunder Mountain is a classic "mine train" coaster that is significantly more jarring, featuring sudden turns and a "bumpy" ride that mimics a runaway train; it tops out at 36 mph. Slinky Dog is entirely outdoors and relies on visual "toy" theming, whereas Big Thunder features dark tunnels and immersive rockwork. In 2026, Slinky Dog Dash remains the more popular and "intense" of the two for younger children due to its height and second launch, while Big Thunder remains a nostalgic favorite for its classic storytelling and "wildest ride in the wilderness" vibe.
