Check the airline's appMany airlines provide information such as seat maps that are accessible via their apps and websites before the day of travel. These maps will show you the layout of every seat on the plane and whether it's been booked or not.
Though not 101% accurate, being not entirely real time, it is a very valuable tool. Seat alerts is a cut down element of the ExpertFlyer software available via the usual platforms such as Google Play.
When a flight has more passengers who are ready to fly than there are seats available, airlines must first ask passengers to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation, before bumping anyone involuntarily. Airlines may offer passengers incentives, such as money or vouchers, to volunteer.
Passengers can inquire about overbooking by contacting their respective airlines or using apps that show available seats per cabin. If your flight is overbooked, airlines will usually ask for volunteers to give up their seats and offer compensation in return.
Ask the airline to check the “USAGE” status of the underlying ticket record. You'll need the ticket number, or the original locator, at a minimum. If the ticket says “USED” they boarded the flight. If it says 'EXCHANGED” they changed it into something else & if it says “OPEN” or “NO SHOW” they didn't fly.
Unlike other ticket based businesses, airlines manipulate unsold seats to increase in value as the departure date approaches. This allows airlines to sell miles to banks, inflating the conversion of miles to cash, making more on “free award travel “ than they would have selling the tkt for cash.
Some airlines simply sell enough tickets to fill every seat. Although this practice significantly reduces the chances that a passenger will be bumped, the airline may still bump passengers in rare circumstances - such as when the seat is needed for a Federal Air Marshall.
Depending on the airline company, flight benefits may extend to a flight attendant's family. Some companies allow parents or children to fly for free, but this benefit most typically applies to spouses and applies to trips outside of work. Some airlines also provide additional free flights in the form of buddy passes.
The most important point to clear up is that airline employees do pay for their travel unless they are commuting for work. Even though they may not be responsible for covering the airfare that you would normally pay to fly, they are responsible for paying the taxes and fees on their tickets.
