Is the Everest ride in Animal Kingdom scary?

Some parts of Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain may be scary for children. This attraction features loud noises, fast drops, high speeds, dark places and frightening creature effects.

Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is considered one of the more intense "thrill" rides at Disney's Animal Kingdom, but whether it is "scary" depends on the rider's sensitivity to heights and speed. In 2026, it remains famous for its massive 80-foot drop and its unique mid-ride gimmick where the train "runs out of track" and spirals backward in total darkness. This backward section can be disorienting and creates a high-G force sensation. Additionally, the ride features a large, growling Yeti animatronic (though "Disco Yeti" fans in 2026 will note it still mainly uses strobe effects for movement). While there are no inversions (loops), the combination of the high-altitude lift hill, the backward section, and the sudden drop makes it "scary" for young children or those with a fear of heights. However, for most coaster enthusiasts, it is considered a "high-adventure" family coaster rather than an extreme "white-knuckle" ride.

When you go to a high elevation there is less air pressure. The lower air pressure makes air less dense (thinner) and so there is less oxygen in the air you breathe. At the top of Mount Everest there is only ? of the oxygen available as there is at sea level.
