Is the train system good in Italy?

High speed services operate between the major cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, Milan and Turin and can get you to your destination very quickly. Reaching speeds of up to 300 kilometers an hour they are convenient, fast and the best way to travel between cities.

The Italian train system is excellent and is widely considered one of the best and most cost-effective ways to travel through Europe in 2026. The network is split between the high-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains, which connect major hubs like Rome, Florence, Milan, and Naples at speeds of up to 300 km/h, and the Regionale trains that reach smaller towns. The high-speed service is frequent, comfortable, and often features Wi-Fi and catering, making it a viable alternative to domestic flights. For instance, the trip from Rome to Florence takes just 90 minutes. While the regional trains are slower and occasionally suffer from minor delays or older carriages, they are incredibly cheap and offer a scenic "slow travel" experience through the countryside. Travelers should use the Trenitalia or Italo apps for easy booking and digital boarding passes. One critical rule to remember is that if you have a physical "paper" regional ticket without a specific time, you must validate it in the green or yellow machines at the station before boarding to avoid a heavy fine, a common mistake for international tourists.

In most cases tickets are sold in unlimited numbers so the train can't sell out, although regional trains on a few routes now have limited numbers.

Like I mentioned above, Italo is usually cheaper than Trenitalia but because the cabins on lower-class tickets aren't the most comfortable, I'll usually consider Italo only for trains that are less than 2 or 3 hours long unless the Comfort ticket class is cheaper than Trenitalia.

Dining car service is provided on international trains in Europe, but only at specific times. Trains equipped with bar cars serve light meals at any time.

My personal favorite way of getting around Italy is traveling by train. Most cities are connected to a local train station making train travel convenient, easy, and relatively fast. While regional and intercity trains get you where you need to go, faster trains also exist that allow you to travel Italy in style.
