Is there a buffet car on Bernina Express?

A: There's no restaurant car, but a refreshment trolley service is available. You can also bring your own food and wine. ????Q: What is the difference between 1st class and 2nd class on the Bernina Express? A: 2nd class has fabric seats with more seating, while 1st class has leather seats, more space, and fewer seats.

As of early 2026, the Bernina Express does not feature a traditional walk-up buffet car or dining carriage where passengers sit to eat. Instead, the panoramic train offers a high-quality minibar trolley service that moves through the aisles. This service provides a selection of regional snacks, light refreshments, specialty Swiss chocolates, and beverages, including local wines and spirits. For those wanting more substantial information about the journey, the "InfoT(r)ainment" digital companion is available via free onboard Wi-Fi. Because the full trip from Chur to Tirano takes about four hours, passengers are encouraged to eat before boarding or enjoy a meal at one of the stops, such as the famous restaurant at Alp Grüm or in the palm-lined town of Tirano at the end of the line.

  • The Bernina Express route runs all year round. Visit in spring to see green fields and farming villages in all their colorful beauty.
  • Visit during winter, and frozen lakes, snow-covered mountains, and local skiers are the main sights. In short, any time is a good time to take this ride!

There is a coach with panoramic views in first class AND in second class. In my view the best option and most economic way is the second class coach with panoramic views. First class has a bit more space. We bought our tickets on the spot and the train was almost empty (beginning of February and during the week).
