In 2026, Bangkok still utilizes two primary, separate card systems for its transit networks, though integration is slowly improving. The Rabbit Card is the stored-value card used for the BTS Skytrain (the elevated lines); it can also be used for payments at many convenience stores and fast-food outlets. For the MRT (the underground Blue and Purple lines), you traditionally use the MRT Plus Card or an MRT Token. However, a major convenience for tourists is that the MRT now accepts Contactless Credit and Debit Cards (Visa and Mastercard) directly at the turnstiles, removing the need for a specific MRT card. The BTS is also moving toward contactless acceptance, but the Rabbit Card remains the most reliable method for the Skytrain. Unfortunately, there is no single "universal" card that seamlessly covers the BTS, MRT, and the Airport Rail Link in one go (the "Mangmoom" or Spider Card project has had limited success). For most travelers, carrying a Rabbit Card for the BTS and using a contactless credit card for the MRT is the most efficient way to navigate the city without constantly queuing for individual tickets at machines.
