As of early 2024, smoking is completely prohibited on all Shinkansen (Japanese bullet train) services, including the famous Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu lines. For decades, these trains featured specialized "smoking rooms" located in the vestibules between certain cars, which allowed passengers to have a cigarette without returning to a station. However, JR Group (Japan Railways) phased out these remaining smoking rooms to align with increasing health consciousness and stricter indoor smoking laws in Japan. Today, all Shinkansen cars are 100% non-smoking, and even electronic cigarettes or "heat-not-burn" devices are banned. If you are a smoker, you must use the designated smoking areas located on the station platforms or in the concourses before boarding. It is important to note that smoking in non-designated areas of the train or station can lead to fines, and the rules are strictly enforced. This change has been welcomed by most travelers for providing a much cleaner and fresher environment on some of the world's most sophisticated high-speed trains.
