It is definitely tame compared to drop tower rides at a lot of other parks, since on many of those, you're out in the open with your legs dangling; TOT is a lot less intimidating since you're enclosed in an elevator and don't see how high up you are.

Several riders complained of neck and back injuries in 1998 after bolts on the ride broke and cables snapped, sending an elevator car plunging one floor down before an emergency brake halted the fall. On July 12, 2005, a 16-year-old girl experienced a heart attack within minutes after she exited the ride.
Your child is welcome to ride the attraction accompanied by a 14-year-old (or older) as long as he meets the 44in (112cm) or taller requirement set for Space Mountain at Walt Disney World. Each row holds one passenger; three passengers per rocket car, so your child would be accompanied by other people.
If you think he's ready go for it. If he gets in & sees the ride vehicles & wants to back out, there's always an escape hatch for those space travelers that want to abort the mission. I've had parents tell me that they've taken their 5 year olds on SM & they loved it - others were terrified.
No need to worry. If your son is tall enough to ride, he won't have a problem, unless he simply gets scared. There are no big drops on Space Mtn.; only small short ones (at least 3 or 4). The scariest part is the dark and if you're not in the front, you really can't see where your going.

Those screams are meant to entice Guests to go ride Tower of Terror. However, those screams are totally fake! The screams you'll hear along Sunset Boulevard are actually a recording from speakers strategically placed on the walkways near the ride.
Fun Facts. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Attraction is 199 feet tall, making it the highest attraction at Walt Disney World® Resort. Imagineers say the attraction contains only 13 floors because the tower is full of so many 'tall stories. '
What most people do not realize, though, is that these restrictions were changed to 200 feet by the time The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (1994) and Animal Kingdom roller coaster, Expedition Everest (1998), were built, so they are both taller than Magic Kingdom's famous castle.
