Is Wentworth Woodhouse the same as Wentworth Castle?

Infuriated, Thomas Wentworth used his skills as a soldier and diplomat to plot revenge. Within a few years he had bought, extended and renamed his own house and estate, just six miles away from Wentworth Woodhouse, at the estate we now know as Wentworth Castle.

The house is now owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust whose sole purpose is regeneration of the site for the benefit of South Yorkshire. The house is now open to the public, Tuesday to Sunday, for morning tours, afternoon free-flow exploration and events.

The Trust bought the house in 2017 for £7 million after a five-year campaign led by Rotherham businesswoman Dame Julie Kenny DBE DL and SAVE and embarked on a programme of mixed-use regeneration which will take up to two decades to deliver and will cost over £130 million.

The house, just outside Rotherham, is Britain's biggest private home. A few facts to help you understand its size: it has 365 rooms, 1,000 windows and two and a half acres of roof, and its 600ft East Front façade - sandy-coloured stone blackened by coal smoke - is twice the length of Buckingham Palace.
