But in general, If you want to do the touristy program then Luzern is the place. Zurich is the business city of Switzerland, it is very lovely and has many things to offer... but it is not as picture book quaint as Luzern.

Lucerne is best-known for the wooden bridge spanning the river to connect the city. The most famous and world's oldest one is the Chapel Bridge dating back to the 14th century. This pedestrians bridge is decorated with pictures representing Lucerne's history.
If you're looking for views then this route will most likely disappoint, especially if you're used to Swiss standards. There is some token scenery in the form of two lakes en route to take in however.
The central Old Town area is compact and can get crowded, but it's easy to lose the herd by venturing out a little to see the famous Lion of Lucerne or walk the Musegg Wall, with its series of watchtowers. All the major sites are walkable.
Luzern is more comfortable, old money and beautiful setting on the lake. Interlaken is closer to the big mountains, hiking, etc. I prefer Interlaken, but Luzern is more comfortable for first time to Switzerland. I would not want to spend 4 hours on the train to commute from one to the other however.
June to September: This is the peak season when the weather is pleasant and Lucerne is full of tourists. The gateway to central Switzerland, Lucerne's proximity to the Alps ensures that it is cool even in summers, particularly in the evenings.
Luzern is lovely and has much to offer the visitor.Geneve is an expensive (and soulless) big city and international business center. This will be our 4th day in Luzern and we both love this town. Luzern kind of reminds me of a mini paris with all the outdoor restaurants,river through the city,and a lot of shops.
