Should you do Universal or Islands of Adventure first?

Overall we would always lean towards Islands of Adventure for early park admission. The main reason is this park is home to the newest Universal ride the VelociCoaster. As you can imagine this ride can have one of the longest wait times in the parks throughout the day.



In 2026, the best strategy is to start with Universal's Islands of Adventure, specifically if you arrive at park opening ("rope drop"). This park contains the most popular high-demand attractions, such as Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the VelociCoaster, which see their longest wait times in the middle of the day. By finishing the "thrill" side of the resort in the morning, you can then take the Hogwarts Express (if you have a Park-to-Park ticket) over to Universal Studios Florida in the afternoon. Universal Studios generally has more indoor, high-capacity simulator rides (like Revenge of the Mummy and Transformers) that handle afternoon crowds and heat better than the outdoor coasters at Islands of Adventure. Additionally, ending your day at Universal Studios allows you to be closer to the front exit and CityWalk for dinner. However, with the 2025 opening of Epic Universe, you should check if that third park is your true priority, as it currently draws the largest crowds in the entire Universal Orlando Resort.

That said, Wizarding World (like most of the rides at Universal Studios) is probably best suited for kids 7 & up. Kids who are already well-versed in all things Potter will have the best time since every nook and cranny is inspired by J.K. Rowling's sprawling imagination.

Plus, the park is considerably more than some other waterparks like SeaWorld's Aquatica. Having shelled out that money ourselves and spending the day at the park, we are happy to say that yes, Volcano Bay is worth the money.

However, the Universal Studios age recommendation is a fairly mature 8 years-old. If they're younger they probably won't be able to appreciate much of the entertainment or be able to go on many rides, but families do have a fun experience when taking a trip together.

Best Time of Year to Visit There's really no off season for Universal, but the week after Labor Day until mid-December (excluding Thanksgiving week) and January to mid-May (excluding spring break) are known for smaller crowds, cooler weather, and less humid air.
