Should you stay overnight in Hvar?

I think you should look at spending a night or two on Hvar, at least three in Dubrovnik and the rest in Split. If you have the time you might as well stay a night or two in Hvar. Obviously you could take a day trip out there, but staying a night will allow you to soak up the atmosphere of the place a bit better.

Staying overnight in Hvar is highly recommended if you want to experience the island's dual personality. During the day, Hvar Town is a bustling hub for day-trippers and yacht-goers, but once the last ferries depart for Split around sunset, the atmosphere transforms into something much more intimate and magical. An overnight stay allows you to enjoy the "Golden Hour" from the Fortica Fortress without rushing back to the harbor. It also gives you access to the world-famous nightlife, ranging from chic cocktail bars like Carpe Diem to hidden wine cellars in the backstreets, which you would otherwise miss. Furthermore, staying overnight provides the opportunity to explore the quieter parts of the island, such as the ancient town of Stari Grad or the lavender fields of Jelsa, in the calm of the early morning before the crowds arrive. In 2026, the island has increased its focus on sustainable "slow travel," making a multi-day stay far more rewarding than a frantic 6-hour excursion.

Hvar is enormous. We stayed in Hvar only for 2 days so didn't have the chance to wander to the other side of the island to Jelsa and beyond. To explore the local area of Hvar, Stari Grad, and Zarace we rented an ATV. The streets were perfect for it and better than the hassle of renting a car.
