While "true" lie-flat beds are reserved for business class, several airlines have pioneered "couch-style" sleeper seats in economy that allow passengers to transform a row of three or four seats into a flat surface. The pioneer of this concept is Air New Zealand with its "Economy Skycouch." This feature includes footrests that flip up 90 degrees to create a wide, flat play or sleep area, complete with a thin mattress and pillows. Following this success, several other carriers introduced similar products. Lufthansa offers the "Sleeper's Row" on long-haul flights, where passengers can book an entire row of three seats with a mattress and blanket. ANA (All Nippon Airways) offers the "COUCHii" on its Airbus A380 routes to Hawaii, similar to the Skycouch. Vietnam Airlines and Azul Brazilian Airlines also offer "Sky Sofa" or "Skycouch" versions. More recently, Air New Zealand has introduced the "Skynest," which is a set of six actual bunk beds available for four-hour rental periods in the economy cabin of ultra-long-haul flights. These options are a game-changer for families with small children or solo travelers who want a bit of rest without the multi-thousand-dollar price tag of a traditional Business Class ticket.
