What animals are in the Cinque Terre?

Amongst the animals stand out the presence of seagulls, pilgrim eagles, buzzards, boars, badgers, foxes, and lizards. Whilst in the sea “saraghi”, anchovies, gorgons, poseidons and some sponges.

The Cinque Terre National Park is home to a diverse array of Mediterranean wildlife, ranging from marine species to mountain-dwelling mammals. Along the famous hiking trails between the five villages, you are very likely to encounter wild boars (Cinghiale), which are so numerous they occasionally cause friction with local farmers. Small mammals like the faina (beech marten), weasels, and badgers also inhabit the terraced hillsides. The sky is dominated by majestic birds of prey, including the Peregrine falcon, which nests in the steep sea cliffs, as well as kestrels and sparrowhawks. Near the water, you will see yellow-legged gulls and cormorants. The surrounding Marine Protected Area is even more diverse; it is part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, meaning it’s possible to spot bottlenose dolphins and even fin whales further out at sea. Closer to shore, the rocky seabed is teeming with colorful wrasse, damselfish, and the occasional octopus, making the area a paradise for both hikers and snorkelers alike.

A classic aperitif here in the Cinque Terre is a nice plate of anchovies presented filleted, arranged on a plate in an orderly 'petal' shape. A simple condiment, a drizzle of Ligurian olive oil and a small piece of garlic, they match very well with the white wine of the Cinque Terre and its salinity.
