What class airspace is restricted?

Class A airspace is more restrictive than Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, or Class G airspace. Class B airspace is more restrictive than Class C, Class D, Class E, or Class G airspace.

Unless otherwise authorized or required by ATC, no person may operate an aircraft at or below 2,500 feet above the surface within 4 nautical miles of the primary airport of a Class C airspace area at an indicated airspeed of more than 200 knots (230 mph).

Class D is used for all control zones and most terminal areas. Class E is generally used for all airspace from 3500 feet to FL195, with the exception of TMA's and airspace over the North Sea. Class F is not used. Class G is used below 3500 feet, except around controlled airports, and below FL195 over the North Sea.

Class D areas should normally extend upward from the surface up to and including 2,500 feet AGL. The altitude must be converted to MSL and rounded to the nearest 100 feet.

The FAA requires that all aircraft obtain ATC approval prior to entering Class D airspace. Approval is given by the ATC facility that provides ATC services for the designated airspace. This is usually the local tower at a controlled airport.

Class E Enroute Airspace You may have heard that Class E airspace starts at 14,500 feet, but if you look at the sectional, this often isn't the case. In the vast majority of areas, there are enough airports and victor airways to have Class E begin at 1,200 feet AGL. This is known as enroute Class E airspace.

The upper limit of the airspace should not exceed 10,000 feet MSL. However, high airport field elevation, adjacent high terrain, or operational factors may warrant a ceiling above 10,000 feet MSL.

Class C airspace is designed to establish and maintain safe separation of mixed general aviation and airline traffic. It is usually upside-down wedding cake shaped and depicted on charts with two bold magenta rings along with numbers indicating the airspace floor and ceiling within each ring.

Violating prohibited airspace established for national security purposes may result in military interception and/or the possibility of an attack upon the violating aircraft, or if this is avoided then large fines and jail time are often incurred.

The specific altitudes the restrictions apply to will vary depending on the needs of the controlling agency. In some cases, you may find that you can fly either above or below the restricted airspace rather than detour around it.
