You can access Delta lounges with a paid Delta Sky Club® membership, with Delta elite status or if you're flying in a premium cabin with Delta or an eligible partner airline (in certain situations).

Delta Diamond, Platinum, or Gold Medallion Status permits entry to the Club when flying in Delta Premium Select internationally or in Delta One (or the equivalent cabin on a Delta partner operated flight).
Delta Silver Medallion members do not get lounge access. This perk is reserved for Gold-level members and above flying internationally. That said, elite status isn't the only way to gain Sky Club access. Anyone can buy an annual membership for $695.

Customers with select Platinum Cards and Centurion Cards from American Express may access Delta Sky Club locations when traveling on a same-day ticket on a Delta-operated (Delta or Delta Connection) or Delta-marketed flight operated by WestJet (006 ticket number).

Silver Medallion status does expire if you do not meet the required amount of flying and spend. That said, each year, you can roll over the EQMs earned beyond status to the next year so it can count for the next year's elite status.
Miles don't expire. MQMs reset each calendar year as you track toward a new year of Status. Delta follows the same policy as American for its “Medallion Year,” meaning that your status will be valid until January 31 two years after the calendar year in which you earned it.
Hold a Delta co-branded credit cardIf you carry a co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit card, you'll automatically be assigned the Main Cabin 1 zone (unless you already are in the premium cabin or elite status). Since you will probably board before most of the main cabin, there should be plenty of overhead bin space.
