What did Lightning Lane replace?

Lightning Lanes have replaced the FastPass lines at Disney theme parks. These work as expedited queues for rides, allowing guests to surpass the standard line in favor of a faster option. Lightning Lane access isn't free. It comes as a perk when you purchase Genie+.

Lightning Lane officially replaced the FastPass+ system at Walt Disney World and the FastPass/MaxPass system at Disneyland. FastPass+ was a complimentary service that allowed guests to reserve three rides in advance for free. In 2021, Disney retired the free service and introduced Disney Genie+, a paid model that used the "Lightning Lane" branding for the physical entrance. In July 2024, the "Genie+" name was retired and the system was rebranded simply as Lightning Lane Multi Pass, bringing back the ability to pre-book rides before your vacation (similar to the old FastPass+) but retaining the paid "per person, per day" cost. Effectively, the "Lane" is the entrance, while the "Pass" is the digital ticket you buy to use it.
