Why was Disney Fast Pass cancelled?

Disney FastPass+ was not operational at Disney World since the parks reopened in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was cited as due to the need to create proper social distancing.

Disney cancelled the free FastPass and FastPass+ systems in 2021 to transition toward a paid revenue model and better manage modern park capacity. The original system, while beloved for being free, often resulted in "FastPass" lines that were actually quite long, as nearly every guest utilized the service. By replacing it with Genie+ (now renamed Lightning Lane Multi Pass in 2026), Disney accomplished two goals: they generated a new stream of high-margin revenue and reduced the total number of people in the "skip-the-line" queues, theoretically making the wait shorter for those who pay. Additionally, the move to a paid system helped Disney recoup the massive financial losses incurred during the 2020 global pandemic. It also allowed for dynamic pricing, where the cost to skip lines increases during busy holiday periods to balance demand.
