While there is no officially branded "Disney" park that has been abandoned, Nara Dreamland in Japan is the most famous "Disney-like" park that sat in ruins for a decade. Opened in 1961, it was a near-exact replica of California's Disneyland, featuring its own Sleeping Beauty Castle, Main Street U.S.A., and a Matterhorn-style mountain. It was built with Walt Disney's initial cooperation before a falling out led to it becoming a standalone entity. Following the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, Nara Dreamland's attendance plummeted, leading to its closure in 2006. For ten years, it became a legendary destination for urban explorers ("haikyoists") before it was completely demolished in 2017. Another famous "abandoned" project is Wonderland outside Beijing, China, which featured a Disney-style castle but was never finished and sat partially constructed for years before being cleared. These "knock-off" parks serve as a reminder of the massive influence Disney's design has had on the Asian theme park market.
