What does Disney do with all the leftover food?

When prepared food goes unused at Disney Parks, it doesn't get tossed—it gets donated. The Disneyland® Resort donates over 2,000 pounds each month to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Disney utilizes a multi-layered approach to manage surplus food, focusing on donation, composting, and energy conversion. Unused, prepared meals from various resort locations are frequently donated to local organizations, such as the Second Harvest Food Bank, to support food-insecure populations in Central Florida and Orange County. For food scraps and non-consumable waste, Walt Disney World operates an advanced anaerobic digestion system that breaks down organic matter to produce biogas. This biogas is then converted into electricity used to power the resort's massive infrastructure, including hotels and attractions. Additionally, large quantities of food waste are processed into high-quality compost soil, which is used to fertilize the lush landscapes and gardens throughout the theme parks. Used cooking oil is also collected and recycled into biodiesel to fuel the Disney transport bus fleet. Through these initiatives, Disney diverts tens of millions of pounds of food waste from landfills annually, effectively turning "trash" into renewable energy and community support.
