What does the L stand for in LNER?

LNER stands for London North Eastern Railway. We run up and down the East Coast mainline from busy London right up the east side of England to stunning Inverness.

The L in LNER stands for London. The full name of the company is the London North Eastern Railway. In 2026, LNER is a government-owned train operating company that runs the premier long-distance services on the East Coast Main Line, connecting London King's Cross with the North East of England and Scotland, including cities like York, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. The "L" signifies the southern terminus of the line, which has historically been the starting point for journeys to the northern reaches of the UK. The current LNER brand was launched in 2018, echoing the name of the historic "Big Four" railway company that operated from 1923 until nationalization in 1948. For travelers today, the "L" is synonymous with the iconic "Azuma" high-speed trains that have become the flagship of the East Coast route, offering some of the fastest and most comfortable rail travel in the United Kingdom.
