In the five villages of Cinque Terre, the cuisine is defined by the Ligurian coast's fresh seafood and aromatic herbs. The "must-get" dish is Troffi or Trenette al Pesto, as this region is the ancestral home of basil pesto (Pesto alla Genovese). Another local specialty is anchovies from Monterosso; unlike the salty tinned variety, these are often served fresh, marinated in lemon and olive oil, or fried. For a quick snack, you should try Focaccia ligure, which is a thick, oily flatbread often topped with sea salt or rosemary, and Farinata, a savory pancake made from chickpea flour. For dessert, look for the Torta Monterossina, a decadent cake filled with custard and jam. Finally, pair your meal with a glass of Sciacchetrà, a rare and sweet DOC dessert wine produced from the sun-dried grapes grown on the steep, terraced vineyards that overlook the Mediterranean Sea.

Vernazza: Located to the north of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza is probably the most beautiful and picturesque fishing village of Cinque Terre, where its colourful houses hang above the sea level on rugged cliffs. It has a charming natural port and an old castle, built to protect the area from pirates.

Visit some of the villages Choose to visit two or three of the villages, for example Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore. You have to skip Corniglia situated on top of a cliff 100 metres above sea level. If you are limited on time, take the train between the villages.

The key staple here is anchovies (acciughe; ah-CHOO-gay) — ideally served the day they're caught. There's nothing cool about being an anchovy virgin. If you've always hated anchovies (the harsh, cured-in-salt American kind), try them fresh here.

Bring mosquito spray with you! As throughout Italy and in the Mediterranean sea in the Cinque Terre there are many insects: mosquitoes, bees, wasps, sand flies and much more. There are not particular problems if you use mosquito spray before sunset and during the night (and during the day if you are allergic).

In the small harbour of Manarola, you can sunbathe on the rocks, and dive into the sea (or use the small ladder). The water is deep, so for good swimmers only. This is one of my favourite swimming spots in the Cinque Terre, especially late afternoon.

There are portions of the trail which are very easy, there's even a paved section connecting Riomaggiore to Manarola, and there are some portions which are a little more difficult, but nothing too strenuous. The hike can even be enjoyed by children.
