What happened to the owner of Hays Travel?

John Hays died on 13 November 2020, aged 71, after collapsing at the company's Sunderland head office.

John Hays, the founder and managing director of Hays Travel, passed away unexpectedly on November 13, 2020, at the age of 71. He collapsed at the company's head office in Sunderland while "doing the job he loved." John Hays was a highly respected figure in the travel industry, famously saving thousands of jobs in 2019 when he and his wife, Dame Irene Hays, acquired the entire retail estate of Thomas Cook after its collapse. Following his passing, the local community in Sunderland honored him by lighting up city monuments in the Hays Travel colors. Dame Irene Hays, who was already a co-owner and chair of the company, took over the full leadership of the business as chair and owner. In 2026, the company continues to operate as the UK's largest independent travel agent, strictly following the family-oriented legacy and commitment to the North East that John Hays established over four decades of service.
