If a delay with KLM causes you to miss a connecting flight—and both flights were booked under the same ticket/booking reference—the airline is legally responsible for your "duty of care" under EU Regulation 261/2004 (and similar UK laws). First, KLM must rebook you on the next available flight to your final destination at no extra cost. While you wait, if the delay exceeds two hours, they must provide vouchers for food and refreshments. If the new flight requires an overnight stay, KLM is required to provide hotel accommodation and transportation between the airport and the hotel. Furthermore, if the missed connection results in you arriving at your final destination more than three hours late, you may be entitled to financial compensation ranging from €250 to €600, depending on the total distance of your journey. This compensation is only waived if the delay was caused by "extraordinary circumstances," such as extreme weather or an air traffic control strike, which are beyond the airline's control.
