As of January 27, 2026, Southwest Airlines officially retired its famous "open seating" model in favor of assigned seating, which has fundamentally changed the meaning of the A1-A15 boarding group. Previously, A1-A15 were the "Business Select" spots that allowed you to pick any seat first. In the new 2026 system, your boarding group (1 through 8) is tied to your seat assignment and fare class. A1-A15 has been replaced by Group 1, which is reserved for Choice Extra fare passengers, those who purchased "Extra Legroom" upgrades, and A-List Preferred members. These passengers are the first to board after the "Preboarding" group. While you no longer have to "race" for a seat, being in the first boarding group is still highly coveted in 2026 because it guarantees that there will be overhead bin space directly above your assigned seat for your carry-on luggage, avoiding the need to "gate-check" your bags on a full flight.
