What is an airport operations center?

While ATC (Air Traffic Control) deals with aircraft movements in the sky, AOCs (Airport Operation Centers) focus on the end-to-end processes considering departing passengers and arriving passengers.

An Airport Operations Center (APOC) is the "nerve center" or "brain" of an airport. It is a centralized command post where various stakeholders—including airport management, airlines, ground handlers, security, and emergency services—coordinate all activities in real-time. The APOC monitors everything from gate assignments and baggage handling systems to snow removal and security breaches. Unlike the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, which focuses on the movement of aircraft in the sky and on runways, the APOC focuses on the efficiency and safety of the landside and terminal operations. They use massive "video walls" to track flight data, weather patterns, and CCTV feeds. If there is a major delay, a medical emergency, or a technical failure, the APOC is responsible for managing the response and ensuring that information is communicated to passengers. In short, the APOC ensures that the thousands of moving parts within an airport work together as a single, cohesive system to keep flights on time and passengers safe.
